Introduction to “My Heart Is Brim With Joy”
The title and subtitle of my book are statements made by Ammon in the 26th chapter of Alma, verses 11 and 16. I’ve had them underlined for many years, and have paused over them dozens of times as I’ve read, and thought, “There is the title of my book!”
“My heart is brim with joy!” How could it be better said? That is how I feel. I’m the most blessed man on earth. I have a testimony of the Lord’s gospel and of His Atonement. I’ve been able to repent of my sins, and to put my life in order. I’ve been given the Holy Priesthood of God, which has enabled me to serve my fellow men and to learn the important lessons of life. I’ve been privileged to take upon me all of the ordinances and covenants available to God’s children. Those ordinances and covenants have given me a choice, eternal companion who has brought me more joy than I could ever have imagined. She has given me the 10 most precious children and friends one could have. We’ve been married 43 years, and those 10 children have given us 43 precious grandchildren. That number will multiply exponentially as the Abrahamic covenant is applied to me individually.
I live in my promised land. There can be no more beautiful place on earth. The Lord led my family to this place as surely as He led Lehi to his promised land.
Better than that, I live at the apex of time—the time to which all the prophets of old looked forward and prophesied about. I’m surrounded by luxury, technology, books, opportunity, multiple scriptures, and the gift of the Holy Ghost. I have prophets and Apostles and the Church organization to lead, guide, and protect me. No one else in the history of this earth has had such blessings.
I have good health, a good mind, and the ability to write. My intent is to use that ability to bless my posterity. I want to tell them and the world why my heart is brim with joy, and point the way so that theirs can be, too.
For several hundred years now the world has had the Old and the New Testaments. A few years ago the Church added a subtitle to the Book of Mormon: “Another Testament of Jesus Christ.” While on my mission I found where Wilford Woodruff referred to the Doctrine and Covenants as “Our Testament.”—Old, New, Another, Our—all that’s lacking now is My.
All but the first 12 articles in this book, and about 10 at the end, were written while on our mission to Vanuatu. The articles herein constitute my testimony. Therefore, I am adding another subtitle to this book: “My Testament.”
