THE COLLECTOR
"What do you collect? Do any of you collect anything?" the Sunday School teacher asked. No one responded. I guess Latter-day Saints aren't collectors. It's rather a useless thing to do anyway. Do I collect anything? I asked myself.
Well, yes, I guess that I do. You, James, have a whole shelf full of books containing over 1,000 articles that you've written. That would have to be classified as a collection. You also have 56 grandchildren. What a collection that is! And don't forget about your seashells. Your favorite activity in Vanuatu was to walk the shores looking for different sea shells and pieces of coral. When you got home you made a display case for them in your living room. There are 20 different, unique pieces of coral, and maybe 50 different sea shells.
People collect things because of their uniqueness, beauty, rarity, and value. You have some very unique, beautiful, rare, and valuable specimens in your collections.
You, James, are a collector whether you like that designation or not. You also like rocks, but haven't gone all out about that one. Your prize collection, though, is your posterity, and you can be proud of that. You have the 10 best specimens in the world, 56 grandchildren, and soon to be 12 great grandchildren. This is 2025. You've added to that collection every year since Abby was born in 1993. That's an unbroken run of 32 years, and is likely to continue uninterrupted through eternity. That collection has value! It will benefit the world.
