HANDY POEMS TO HAVE MEMORIZED

Miser's Epitaph

Here lies a man who lived for himself,

And cared for nothing but gathering pelf;

Now where he is and how he fares,

Nobody knows and nobody cares.

Priesthood Authority

How easily are bishops made

By man's or woman's whim;

Wesley, his hands on Coke hath laid,

But who laid hands on him?

(Charles Wesley, disagreeing with his brother, John, when John ordained a man

named Coke to be a bishop to Methodist converts who emigrated to America)

Tangled Knots

With thoughtless and impatient hands

We tangle up the plans

The Lord hath wrought;

And when we cry in pain, he saith,

"Be quiet man, while I untie the knot."

A Minor Bird

I have wished a bird would fly away,

And not sing by my house all day;

Have clapped my hands at him from the door

When it seemed as if I could bear no more.

The fault must partly have been in me.

The bird was not to blame for his key.

And of course there must be something wrong

In wanting to silence any song.
