Safety in Following the Rules

In my family history researches I have come across several tragedies. There was a young man who drowned while canoeing on a lake in Washington. There was a young woman and her 7-year-old niece who died from being burned in an explosion in the home. I theorize that the explosion was caused by refilling kerosene lamps after dark (when the flames were lighted), something my mother said was never, ever to be done. There was a young man killed by his shotgun while crossing a fence. My hunter’s safety course instructed us to always lay our guns on the ground before crossing a fence, something that young man apparently failed to do.

Protective Walls

I have the ability to make myself two inches taller at will. I have stooped shoulders. I regularly lie down flat on my back on the floor. Because of my stooped shoulders my head cannot even contact the floor for perhaps a full minute. Eventually gravity accomplishes the feat, and my whole spine undergoes a thorough stretching. After doing my exercises, I stand up, and a miracle has occurred. My back is straight, and I am two inches taller!

Superlatives

In quick succession Nephi was shown three superlatives: He was shown “the formation of a church which is most abominable above all other churches,” and was then shown its former captives establishing a nation greater than “all other nations” upon “the land which is choice above all other lands.”

My Ancestors Were Slaves

July 4th, 2023. Independence Day. Much was said in testimony meeting two days ago about our independence and freedom.
I am truly free. I am free from debt. I can do each day as I please. No one is persecuting me. I can worship as I please. I am free from sin. I have no addictions. I am not subservient to anyone or anything. I live in the United States of America, the only country in the world governed by a Constitution written by men who were raised up by God for that very purpose. (D&C 101:80)

Five Barley Loaves–Preparation

Jesus, in an effort to be alone, “went up into a mountain” (John 6:3) “into a desert place apart,” and the people “followed him on foot out of the cities.” (Matt. 14:13). He taught them and healed them, and evening came. Not wanting to send the multitude away weak and hungry, He told His disciples to feed them. Andrew said, “There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes.” (John 6:9). With those five barley loaves and two small fishes Jesus fed “five thousand men, beside women and children.” (Matt. 14:21).

Family History and Temple Work

I recently heard some statistics concerning family history. I can’t remember where I heard them but I think they were about as follows:
A survey showed that if no one in the ward leadership is involved in family history, only 4% of the ward is doing it. If one person in the ward leadership is involved in family history, the involvement of the ward doubles to 8%. If two in the ward leadership are involved, then 11 or 12% of the ward will be. If a stake leader becomes involved, the percentage rises even more.

The Blessings of Dementia

How on earth could an awful thing like dementia ever be considered a blessing?
Let me tell you.
In July 2021 the Meridian Temple had just reopened after the COVID 19 shutdown. Marjorie and I made a hugely unsettling discovery. As we resumed working our Wednesday mid shift as temple ordinance workers Marjorie found that she could not remember the temple veil ceremony nor any of the other things that were necessary for an ordinance worker to know and to do. She had no short-term memory, could not follow a recipe, and was in a rapid slide into debilitating dementia. We were forced to ask for release from our temple callings.

Family History Discoveries

Last summer I found a third cousin, once removed, in my father’s line that goes back to my 3rd great grandparents, Thomas and Jane Pierce. The young man’s name was Earl Robert Hulse, born 1923 in Kansas (G6TX-H6T). He went off to war, and was lost at sea in the Pacific Ocean on 21 July 1942. His parents are gone, and his only sibling died in 1995. He was unmarried. There is no close relative left who would be able to see to his temple work. The man gave his life for our country. I, therefore, requested permission from the temple department to do his temple work. Permission was granted. One of my grandsons was baptized for him in July, and I personally did his initiatory work, endowment, and sealing. After the making of such a great sacrifice, I considered it a great honor and privilege to be able to do his work.

I, James Kerns, had never seen them until this date in November 2021. One says, “Boxing. City Championship Corvallis Ore. 1931.” The other is for the intramural boxing championship.

Instruments in the Hands of God

There is a phrase repeated a dozen times in the Book of Mormon that needs to be explored. It was first used by Lehi who said that Nephi had been “an instrument in the hands of God” in bringing them to the land of promise. (2 Nephi 1:24). Lehi used the phrase again as he prophesied of the calling of Joseph Smith. (2 Nephi 3:24). The phrase, “instruments in the hands of God” was picked up and used by Alma and other prophets.

William and Delilah

Yesterday (7 November 2020) I completed my family history research for the family of William and Delilah Frizelle. They were my 3rd great grandparents. My objective was to find all of their children, and to check and correct the vital information of each. I traced each descendant in all of their lines down to at least the year 1910. I made sure that each person either had all of his or her temple ordinances completed, or was put on my own reservation list where I could see to it that the work is done. I sifted through hundreds of people, made scores of corrections, and am now in a position to offer the precious temple ordinances to dozens of people who have not yet had their temple work done.

Three Exodus Events

It strikes me that the experiences of William Brewster were on a parallel with those of Lehi. Lehi’s life was in danger in Jerusalem, and he was commanded by the Lord, “even in a dream, that he should take his family and depart into the wilderness … And it came to pass that he departed into the wilderness. And he left his house, and the land of his inheritance, and his gold, and his silver, and his precious things, and took nothing with him, save it were his family, and provisions, and tents, and departed into the wilderness.” (1 Nephi 2:2, 4).

Am I Essential to the Plan?

President Nelson has asked us as individuals to do several things this year. He has asked us to each read the Book of Mormon, and to ask ourselves questions as we do so; questions such as, what would my life be like without the Book of Mormon, or could Joseph Smith have written this book? We’re to come up with our own questions.
