Formulas For Life
1. How to Repent
“Repentance needs to be done one step at a time. Humble prayer will facilitate each essential step. As prerequisites to forgiveness, there must first be recognition, remorse, then confession. ‘By this ye may know if a man repenteth of his sins—behold, he will confess them and forsake them.’ Confession is to be made to the person who has been wronged. Confession should be sincere and not merely an admission of guilt after proof is evident. If many persons have been offended, confession should be made to all offended parties. Acts that may affect one’s standing in the Church or the right to its privileges should be confessed promptly to the bishop, whom the Lord has called as a common judge in Israel.” (—Russell M. Nelson, April 2007 General Conference)

Recognition + Remorse + Confession =Forgiveness
2. How to Make a Decision
“But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.
“But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; ...” —D&C 9:8-9
3. How to Hear the Spirit
“As members of the Church, we may experience the companionship of the Holy Ghost continually. Through the restored priesthood of God, we are baptized by immersion for the remission of our sins and then confirmed members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In this ordinance, we are given the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of the hands of the holders of the priesthood. Thereafter, we can receive and retain the companionship of the Holy Ghost by always remembering the Savior, keeping His commandments, repenting of our sins, and worthily partaking of the sacrament on the Sabbath day.” (—Robert D. Hales)
Baptism + Remembering Savior + Obedience + Repenting = Hearing Spirit
( also: Desire + Prayer + Quiet + Pondering + Studying Diligently + Service + Worthiness)
4. How to Obtain Peace
“The prophetic counsel to have daily personal and family prayer, [and] daily personal and family scripture study ... are … essential … Without these regular practices it will be difficult to find the desired and much-needed peace and refuge from the world … I bear testimony that living an obedient life, firmly rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ, provides the greatest assurance for peace and refuge in our homes.” (—Richard G. Scott)
“If sin has deprived us of peace within, we can repent and seek forgiveness of our sins. ...he that repents and does the commandments of the Lord shall be forgiven. … The essence of the miracle of forgiveness is that it brings peace... (—Joseph B. Wirthlin)
Prayer + Scripture Study + Obedience + Repentance = Peace
5. How to Receive Revelation
“How is it that ye will perish, because of the hardness of your hearts?
“Do ye not remember the things which the Lord hath said?—If ye ask me in faith, believing that ye shall receive, with diligence in keeping my commandments, surely these things shall be made known unto you.” (1 Nephi 15:10-11)
Ask in faith + Believe +Diligence in keeping commandments - Hardness of heart = Revelation
“...and they had searched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God.
“But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation ...” (Alma 17:2-3)
Search scriptures + Prayer + Fasting = Revelation
