Love Before First Sight

Brent and Mary Kerns grieved over the loss of their well-trained stock dog.  On a road trip Mary was reading the advertisements in the Nickel where she found, "Border Collie, free to good home."  The dog was in Hermiston, Oregon which they were just coming to.

Brent and Mary found the house—a nice home with a big fenced-in yard.  A man and two kids were in the yard.  Brent said, "We're interested in the dog you have advertised."

The man responded, "Oh, you won't want this dog.  It has a bad disposition, and doesn't like people."

At that moment the dog raced around a corner of the house, ran straight for Mary, and jumped into her arms!  The man backed up three steps as his speechless jaws dropped open.

Brent simply said, "We'll take the dog!"  That was the sum total of the conversation between the two parties.

The dog was absolutely devoted to Mary.  It sat on her lap all the way home.  It became a great cattle dog.  It would work for Brent just as long as Mary was in sight.  If Brent rode over the ridge out of Mary's sight, the dog would leave him and go back to Mary.

The dog loved Mary, and knew three days in advance when Mary was going to go away on a trip.  It hovered around her, wouldn't let her out of sight, and sat by the front porch waiting until she returned.
