Multiple Miracles Per Day
Yesterday, via Zoom, we were able to attend sacrament meeting in the Bremerton Ward. Josiah spoke. It was a very well-organized, wisdom-filled talk. It's a miracle that because of technology we were able to participate. It's also a miracle that this baby, born with deformed legs, and encased in a body cast for the first six months of his life, was going off on the mission with no impairments.
I then looked at my emails. There was one from Family Search saying that an image had been added to Mamie Adams' profile. I normally pretty much ignore such notices, but thought it odd that my great-aunt Mamie, who had no children, should have someone interested in her. The image turned out to be a picture of her urn. I clicked on her brother Claude's name, and then on his wife's name (Myra) to verify that I'd done all of their temple work. I'd taken care of the whole family back in 1976 in the Idaho Falls Temple.
I never met Myra, but she left each of her 10 great nephews and nieces (including me) a $4,000 inheritance when she died. She was a good lady. Her husband was a dentist in Portland, also a good person, and they had no children. I was very grateful for the inheritance because I was a needy college student at the time.
When I clicked on Myra's name, I discovered that her parents (no relation to me) did not have their temple work completed. I felt that I owed it to Myra to get the work done. But when I tried to reserve her father's undone temple work, I was unable to do it because of a possible duplicate in the records. A quick examination revealed that the problem was a 4-year-old younger sister of Myra's that nobody knew about. She wasn't listed with her five siblings. Her record was separate from the others. She was born 1887, and was buried in McMinnville, Oregon. The 1890 census was destroyed by fire, so she doesn't show up in any other record. I got her properly inserted into the family, got her parents' records straightened out, and now we can seal Mina to her parents. That whole episode was fortuitous. It was a miracle, and done so quickly. Mina orchestrated that.
After church I came home to administer three patriarchal blessings to three girls, one from Union, one from Imbler, and one from John Day. Being able to give patriarchal blessings at all are absolute miracles in themselves. The Union girl was first. As I prepared to place my hands on her head, I glanced at the paper to put her name in my mind. Her middle name was Edith. A wave of emotion went through me. The Edith, after whom the girl was named, let me know that she was there! I instantly knew that Edith was a grandmother of the girl. I realized who she was. I had interviewed her for temple recommends 30 years ago when I went to her home as a member of the stake presidency. I've never been so emotional in a blessing before. It took a long time to get control of myself. Edith wasn't the only one there from the other side, and that was mentioned in the blessing. I didn't mention Edith, though. I've since determined that Edith is her great grandmother. She is very much invested and interested in her great granddaughter who is a truly outstanding girl. I wish that I could remember and watch this girl, but I won't be able to. I won't forget Edith, though. This needed to be recorded.
Those accounts represent at least five miracles in one day. This morning Marjorie got up at 6:15, and we got to participate in another. We sat on the couch and watched a half-hour "motion picture" called “Sunrise.” The east was spectacularly orange because of being 70% overcast. The rising sun was able to shine on the bottoms of the clouds. The scene changed minute by minute. The orange was interspersed with bright yellows and reds, and the most incredible aqua blues where the sky peeked through. The sun rose spectacularly at 6:44, and sadly, that ended the movie.
Elder Smith observed in Vanuatu, during our mission, that “It's a miracle a day.” I thought that an astute observation then, but he was wrong. It's multiple miracles per day if you're looking for them.
