Rafters

Rafter was Brent and Mary Kerns' horse.  He was a good, obedient horse.  To load him in the stock trailer, all that was necessary was to loop the reins up over the saddle horn and tell him to get in.

Rafter sustained a severe cut on his leg.  Five trips to the vet were necessary to treat the wound.  The treatments were rough and nasty, or Brent could have done them himself.  It was necessary for the vet to take a stiff brush and vigorously clean the wound so that it wouldn't leave a terrible-looking scar.

Rafter hated those treatments.  On his fifth and last trip to the vet, Rafter refused to be loaded in the stock trailer.  Brent tried everything.  He'd lead him to the stock trailer, bring him around again, and encourage him in every way he knew.  Rafter would get to the trailer, plant his feet, and refuse to be loaded.  This went on for perhaps 45 minutes.

Finally Brent looked Rafter right in the eye, and said softly, "It's OK.  This is your last trip to the vet."

Rafter heaved a big sigh, and stepped aboard.
