Right Way Pilot
As a pre-schooler Marjorie hated primary. She didn't know the other children, and the lessons were dull.
Back then the classes had different names than they do now. The next class that Marjorie would be in was the “Right Way Pilots.” She couldn't wait to graduate to that class. She says, “Finally, there was light at the end of the tunnel. I was going to learn to fly! The manual had a picture on the front cover of a chubby-faced kid flying a stubby airplane. That looked so fun! I could just see myself maneuvering my plane over the heads of the people as I flew down the stairs at the church. I never imagined flying my plane outdoors. It was just in the church.”
Marjorie was so excited about attending her first Right Way Pilot class that she couldn't sleep prior to the big event. She was hugely disappointed. “The teacher showed us the picture of the kid flying the airplane and said, 'There's a right way to fly an airplane, and you're going to be right-way pilots.'” Marjorie was so excited that she ran all the way home from Primary. But that was the last time airplanes or flying were mentioned. She expected to be issued her own plane. When it didn't happen, she complained to her mother.
“Well!” she snorted, “you didn't really think you were going to be taught to fly an airplane, did you!? Where would you park it?”
“In my bedroom. Its wings are really short.”
Marjorie says, “I was ready to quit the Church over that. Talk about false advertising!”
