Seeing My Future—A Poem

May 2023

As she came walking down the hall

The lights went dancing off the wall;

The sight quite took me by surprise

For they were coming from her eyes.

Who is this girl—I have to know,

And what is it that makes her glow?

And why do I feel strange inside?

Such a feeling can't be denied.

I'll put myself here every day

To watch in case she comes this way,

And I will plan and improvise

A way to look into those eyes.

Such were my thoughts sixty years now past.

It took five years, but then at last,

She married me—For in that time

The light in her had become mine.

She taught me how, she showed the way,

To change my night to brightest day.

So grateful was that high school boy

To find a wife who brought such joy.

Fifty years past, and now plus four,

With prospects of an eon more.

She made me happy as can be,

And we now face eternity.

Ten kids became fifty-six more,

And they'll become ten times a score.

Generations of posterity

Guarantee joy eternally.

Gratefully I acknowledge thee,

Who bears your light so visibly.
