Stunners and Blockbusters
Among the basic doctrines of the Church are what Neal A. Maxwell called "stunners." (Ensign, November 2003, pg.100). President James E. Faust called them "blockbusters." (Ensign, November 2005, pgs. 21-22). They are monumental, astounding, life changing, and earth shaking. They totally change prevailing religious and philosophical thought. Here is my own collection:
- God is a Person with a glorified body and passions. He is our literal, loving Father. He knows us individually and completely, and desires to bless us.
- Jesus is our Elder Brother, a separate and distinct Person from our Father. He is our Redeemer, our Example, our Savior, and our Advocate with the Father.
- Every worthy man can hold the Priesthood—the authority to act in the name of God—and have his acts be ratified and recognized by the Father.
- A man and a woman can be sealed together for time and all eternity, and their children can be sealed to them, forming marital and family relationships that last into the eternities.
- We have the privilege of forming these same eternal family relationships for our ancestors for as far back as we can trace them.
- We have the opportunity to repent of our sins and have them taken off the books, with the promise that the Father will remember them no more.
- We have the opportunity to become like God, creating and peopling worlds with our own children.
- We have sacred scriptures in addition to the Bible, with the promise of more to come.
- We are led by living Apostles and Prophets, a privilege no one in the world has had for nearly two thousand years.
I could list other stunners and blockbusters. These leave me stunned, astonished, amazed and grateful. I wonder, "Why me?" and ask, "What may I do to repay such great blessings?"
