Taught By an Apostle
It’s 5:00 a.m., and I’ve just gotten up from a dream that I should record. I’m recording it because there was a good line in it, and because it’s something that Marjorie can use when she teaches her workshop in our upcoming Young Single Adult Conference.
In my dream I was at home in Oregon. I had taken Elder Neal A. Maxwell, an Apostle, to visit a local family. The visit had not taken all of his allotted time, so he was standing in my home, in front of the fireplace, teaching my children. The older children weren’t yet home, but the younger ones were so excited to be taught by an Apostle of the Lord that they all ran to get their scriptures.
The older children arrived home. We heard them in the driveway, so I asked Elder Maxwell to pause in his teaching so that the late arrivals could participate. It must have been a winter day, and it must have been warm in our living room like it is when I get the fire burning good. Everyone was grouped around the fireplace. We were warm, and Elder Maxwell fell asleep while we waited for the older kids to come in.
Katie came in happily, and headed straight for the fireplace to get warm. There are always bodies around our fireplace, and Katie hadn’t bothered to see who she might be treading upon. I said, “Katie, excuse me, but you’re standing on an Apostle.” She was properly horrified.
The important point that came out of the dream was a question that came out of somewhere. The question was, “How would you like to have an Apostle of the Lord standing in your home teaching your children?”
The response I gave to that question is that all of the Apostles have been in my home, and have taught my children. My children have possibly heard every story that the Apostles have told in general conference for the past 40 years, because we’ve read them to our children. Jesus Christ has been there and taught them, too, because we have read the scriptures to our children.
The principle is that “…whether by mine own voice, or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.” (D&C 1:38).
The Lord bore His own testimony about the scriptures when He said, “These words are not of men nor of man, but of me; wherefore, you shall testify they are of me and not of man;
“For it is my voice which speaketh them unto you; for they are given by my Spirit unto you, and by my power you can read them one to another; and save it were by my power you could not have them;
“Wherefore, you can testify that you have heard my voice, and know my words.” (D&C 18:34-36).
Sidenote: Marjorie has a project going wherein she is making phone calls and talking to each of her daughters. They’re surprised to be getting calls from Vanuatu. She has managed to reach seven so far, but hasn’t yet been able to connect with the other two. However, while calling her daughters, she’s accidentally gotten two of her sons as well. Nathan was one of them. She told him that we’ve apparently gotten acclimated to this climate because even though it’s 76-degrees, the weather now feels cool to us. “I’ll bet we’re going to freeze to death when we get home,” she told him.
“Oh, I can see it all, Nathan said, “Dad will have a raging fire going in the living room.”
