The Apprentice and the Master Craftsman – James’ Parables

There was once a man who apprenticed himself to a master craftsman.  The master craftsman was able to work with every material, in every medium, and to create beautiful things.  The apprentice desired to become like him, and so became his disciple.

The master craftsman set his apprentice working with metal.  He showed him how to make small, intricate pieces, and to link them together.  The apprentice worked very hard.  He made many mistakes.  He fixed the mistakes that he could, but some of the mistakes that he had made were too big to be fixed.  The whole piece was ruined, and was good for nothing but to be cast out.

The apprentice hadn’t followed the master craftsman’s instructions.  He had taken shortcuts, thinking he had found an easier way.  He felt like a failure.  He humbly admitted his mistakes, and showed the master craftsman what he had done.

The apprentice was filled with joy, when instead of berating him, the master craftsman reached down, and with a few deft strokes, fixed all of the mistakes.  The master craftsman then took the piece, stretched it between his hands, and, behold, the piece that the apprentice thought was good for nothing became a perfectly-interlocked chain, beautiful, complex, and strong beyond comprehension.

The apprentice gazed admiringly upon the piece.  Because he was the creator, he knew every link, and what had been required to form each one.  Two great emotions welled up inside him.  One was great satisfaction in having created a thing of such beauty.  The other was great love and gratitude for the master craftsman.
