The Daily Recipient
Elder Anthony D. Perkins, in his October 2021 conference address used the term “daily recipient.” That caught my fancy. A daily recipient of what? —The Lord's grace, His blessings, His comfort, His guidance, His joy.
I like that phrase because I am a daily recipient.
In order to be a daily recipient one must be a daily participant. One must be a daily participant in the opportunities that the Lord puts before us.
We have the opportunity to pray. Taking advantage of that opportunity opens the way for the Spirit to speak to us. Prayer opens the channel of communication, and enables revelation to flow. It's harder for the Lord to speak to us when we don't initiate the conversation. When we initiate the conversation He knows that He has our attention and that we're more likely to listen, to take heed, and to act.
We have the opportunity to study. The Lord has given us four books of scripture that are filled with wisdom that can give us daily guidance, daily comfort, and peace. Four books!! 2,477 pages of heavenly instruction and love. Those words can't bless us unless we know them and use them. Some people are content to have just one book, and reject the others. Surely that gives the Lord sorrow. There is so much that He wants to tell us. To the open learner He offers more and more. In addition to the Standard Works we have a treasure trove of many years of general conference addresses prepared and given by prophets who pray mightily beforehand to know what the Lord would have them say as they teach the people.
We have the opportunity to serve. Through service we lighten the loads that others carry, and miraculously, find our own burdens lightened. The best place for service is very close at hand—right within our own homes and families.
We have the opportunity to daily experience the ministrations of the Holy Ghost. Baptized members of the Church have the gift of the Holy Ghost's constant companionship. Every one of us underestimates and under-uses this gift. Think of it: The promise of the constant companionship of a member of the Godhead! Yet we often leap out of bed, get busy with our day, and fail to give that divine Companion the time or the chance to speak to us. Making time each morning for some quiet reflection and meditation can pay huge dividends.
We have the opportunity to show love. As we show love we get love in return. We have the opportunity to be kind. Kindness given returns many-fold. We have the opportunity to be forgiving. We have the opportunity to hold our tongues and to be slow to anger. We even have the opportunity to completely banish anger from our makeup and our character. We have the opportunity of making life sweet thereby.
I am a daily recipient of the Lord's blessings and grace. They are real. They are to be treasured. They are to be sought after. I become a recipient as I become a participant. These things take conscious effort.
I am the daily recipient of joy. God be thanked for it.
