The Necessities of Life

Recently as I was praying I found myself thanking the Lord for the necessities of life.  As popularly understood, the necessities of life are food, clothing, and shelter.  Some people in the world lack one or more of those things.  I feel badly for them, and was expressing gratitude that I have those basic things.

But as I prayed, the Spirit taught me that there is one more necessity of life, and that is the gospel of Jesus Christ.  How many more additional people in the world are without that?  This constitutes a true famine of crisis proportions.

Last week in Baker Valley Ward's fast and testimony meeting Bishop Bradford mentioned the many problems that everyone experiences, and encouraged the congregation to focus on gratitude for the blessings that we have.

Jay Wilson then rose to bear his testimony, and augmented the bishop's words.  Jay quoted a saying that my own mother used to repeat:  "I cried because I had no shoes, until I saw a person who had no feet."

The point is that no matter how bad that you think your plight is, there are always others who have it worse.  Jay said, "I have no feet, but the people I feel sorry for are those who don't have the gospel of Jesus Christ."

Jay has had two prosthetic feet all his life, but he hasn't let it slow him down.  He is an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician), a fire fighter, and runs his own successful appliance business.  He is his own chief appliance repairman.  He has the gospel of Jesus Christ, a strong testimony, and is a happy and positive person.

Pity those who don't have what Jay has.  They are lacking the very most necessary necessity of life.
