The Other Day That Cows Were Up

Hay was normally ground for the milk cows at the Warnock Dairy, and blown into the big, blue Harveststore for storage.  On one particular day there just wasn’t time to put the hay into the Harveststore, so it was piled against the back of a loafing shed instead.  When the job was done, everyone left for church.

While everyone was gone, the cows got out and found their way to the pile of feed.  There wasn’t room for them all to gather around the base of the pile, so the more adventuresome ones climbed on the pile where they could eat without being so crowded.  Those at the top also found that they could step from the pile onto the roof of the loafing shed.  A number of them did so.  Meanwhile their companions kept eating away at the ramp and spread it out until it no longer reached the roof.  The cows on the roof couldn’t get down.  They were left stranded as the pile got shorter and shorter.

When the Warnocks returned from church they were shocked to find their Holsteins wandering around on top of the loafing shed, and were at a loss as to how to get them down again.
