The Restoration Was For Me

The Restoration is an individual thing.  Elder D. Todd Christofferson said, "The revelations of the First Vision were not for Joseph Smith alone but are offered as light and truth for any who 'lack wisdom.'"  (Ensign, May 2020, 110).

Joseph Smith's First Vision was certainly for me, as well as for him.  From the time that I was a little boy I wondered if God was a man, a thing, a spirit, or a power.  I wondered if the Father and the Son were one Being or two.  My mother had told me about God, and I wondered about Him.  I remember being 8 or 10 years old and walking in the field where Tim's hay barn now sits.  I was trying to sort these things out in my mind.  I also wondered why,  if God called prophets in ancient times, He didn't do so today.  I thought so deeply on that occasion that I still remember my confusion and my conundrum over 60 years later.  I didn't have much information to work with.  I lacked wisdom.

At the age of 19 I was halfway through my reading of the Book of Mormon when my girlfriend sent me a copy of Joseph Smith's testimony.  I was reading the book with those questions in my mind.  I was looking for the answers.  Light came flooding into my soul as I read the pamphlet.  I believe that only one other experience has had such a profound influence upon me.  Suddenly the answers were right there before me.  God and Jesus were men!  They were separate Beings!  They had called a prophet in our day!  The Book of Mormon was God's word!  He had restored His Church!  I knew that what Joseph said he had seen and heard was true.

The First Vision was not for Joseph Smith alone, but for me, too.  It was for you, and for everyone else as well.  How critical it is that everyone be offered the opportunity to know these precious truths.

Joseph Smith had many other visions.  They weren't for him alone, either.  Moroni's bringing of the Book of Mormon was for me.  So was John the Baptist's bestowal of the authority to baptize.  Peter, James, and John's bringing the Melchizedek Priesthood was so that I could be ordained and hold that same authority.  The visit of Elijah the prophet was for the purpose of making it possible for Marjorie and I to go to the temple to be sealed forever as husband and wife, and for us to forever have the companionship of our children and to forever maintain our family relationships.

The Restoration of the gospel was for me.  Jesus Christ's Atonement was for me.  His resurrection was for me, so that one day I can also be resurrected, receive this same body back again in its perfect form, and forever live with Him and with my family.
