The Shepherds of Israel

As I sat down to study about the priesthood one morning, and to think about what I could use as subject matter to teach my quorum, the first thing I read was this little statement by Elder Henry B. Eyring:

“…the shepherds of Israel.  That is who we are.”

The Ensign, May 2001, pg. 38.

I thought next of Jesus who called Himself “the good shepherd” (John 10:11 and D&C 50:44), and then of all the parables and analogies He used which featured sheep.  Suddenly I was thinking of sheep—my own—and then of all the times sheep have been featured in talks in general conference.  I wrote about my own experience with sheep, and of what I learned from them; and then collected the sheep stories from general conference.  They’re all gathered together here.  These stories teach some excellent lessons on leadership, stewardship, home teaching, visiting teaching, and give insight as to how we can better obey Jesus’ injunction to “Feed my sheep.”  (John 21:15-17).   This would make a fine topic for family home evening.
