There is Always More
As a teenage boy, Nephi heard his father, Lehi, tell about an important dream he had had about the tree of life. Nephi pondered over what his father had said. He sincerely wanted to know what the dream meant, and to know what impact it might have in his own life. As he “pondered” (which is another way of saying “meditated” or “prayed”), he was caught away in the Spirit and was shown some marvelous things. (1 Nephi 11:1). He was not only shown the exact things that his father had seen in the dream, but he was also shown a panoramic history of the future of his posterity. He saw the eventual destruction of his people. He saw a man from the Gentile nations discovering the promised land. He saw the promised land being given to Gentile immigrants from Europe who followed Columbus. He saw the restoration of the gospel coming about through those Gentiles, and then going from them back to the remnant of Lehi’s children.
Nephi saw more than his father did. He faithfully wrote about what he saw. We have his words, and we now have the history of what actually happened in fulfillment of Nephi’s prophetic vision. Nephi was also shown what would happen hereafter, but maddeningly, we don’t have that account, because he was not permitted to write it.
There is always more.
Another teenage boy was called upon to interpret a dream that the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, had. Nebuchadnezzar could not even remember the dream. All he could remember was that he was extremely troubled by it. The teenage boy, Daniel, knew that the Lord could reveal such secrets, and prayed for the Lord to show him the dream. The Lord not only showed him the dream, but also gave him the interpretation. We now have most of the history of what actually happened in fulfillment of Daniel’s prophecy. The stone that was cut out of the mountain without hands (Daniel 2:45) is currently rolling forth to fill the earth.
There is always more.
Interestingly, these two teenage boys were contemporaries. They both had their origins in Jerusalem at the same time, and perhaps even knew one another as boys. One was made a captive, and was sent to Babylon. The other was exiled, and sent on a long, epic journey to America. Both transplantations were orchestrated by the Lord. Both boys became prophets in their respective areas of the world.
Elder Richard G. Scott told in general conference (October 2009) of receiving some information from the Spirit. He wrote it down, and then asked, “Is there more?” There was. He wrote down the additional information that he received in answer to his prayer, and then asked, “Is there more?” There was.
There is always more, and we must seek it.
Isaiah said, “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little.” (Isa 28:10; 2 Nephi 28:30; D&C 98:12; 128:21).
There is always more; and the Lord will give it to us when we’re ready to receive it and when it is wisdom in Him that we should have it. Nephi saw that the European Gentiles brought a book with them when they came to the promised land. The book had “proceed(ed) out of the mouth of a Jew,” and was “a record of the Jews.” (1 Ne. 13:23). Nephi didn’t name the book at that time, but later he did. He knew the name of the book before it had even come into existence. He saw a second book which would come forth from his seed, and which would be offered to the world as a companion book to the first. But he saw that “many of the Gentiles (would) say: A Bible! A Bible! We have got a Bible, and there cannot be any more Bible.” (2 Ne. 29:3).
There was more, but many people won’t receive it. There is always more, for the Lord giveth unto men line upon line, precept upon precept.
In Nephi’s vision he saw that after the Bible “had come forth unto (his descendants) I beheld other books, which came forth by the power of the Lamb, from the Gentiles unto them, unto the convincing of the Gentiles and the remnant of the seed of my brethren, and also the Jews who were scattered upon all the face of the earth, that the records of the prophets and of the twelve apostles of the Lamb are true.
And the angel spake unto me, saying: These last records, which thou hast seen among the Gentiles, shall establish the truth of the first… (1 Ne. 13:39-40).
The Bible was followed by the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ. The Book of Mormon was followed by the Doctrine and Covenants which was followed by the Pearl of Great Price.
Many people have rejected the Book of Mormon thinking that they need nothing more than the Bible. I have discovered that many Latter-day Saints have inadvertently taken a similar stance by having accepted and read the Book of Mormon, but having never read the Doctrine and Covenants or the Pearl of Great Price. What treasures they’re missing! All of these books are treasures beyond price.
And there is always more.
The records of the lost tribes will shortly appear. The Brass Plates are still somewhere, and will be given to the world when we’re ready for them.
I am convinced that we have barely scratched the surface concerning all the knowledge that the Lord wants to give us. There is more, much more.
